A little bit about me…
Since I was 14, I’ve known what I wanted to be when I grew up. Very pivotal things happened in my 14th year. For starters, I had this surgery to correct my crooked back meaning I had a lot of down time for about 6 months. This down time meant 2 things: lots of reading and Turner Classic Movies. Sure it’s valuable to have seen numerous musical comedies and be able to brag at parties about reading a ridiculous number of books deemed “classic literature,” but neither of those are the important, life changing part.
My mother has always been crafty. She’s the “let’s build a rack for our firewood and then go re-upholster a random ottoman” type. She’s made my clothes when I was little (you can read a little interview with her about that here) and it is mostly her fault that I jumped on the DIY / HGTV bandwagon before such channels even existed. Since I was little, I’ve watched TV doodling and somewhere around my 14th year the doodling switched from random cartoons and dreams of alien planets to interior design. I drew houses, then I described all of the people that would live inside along with a custom wardrobe for each, and I designed every room. This was very serious business. Then, whilst laying in bed my 14th year among a flurry of decorating magazines Mama picked up, it hit me… I wanted Martha Stewart‘s job. I don’t think that’s too much ask. All I ever wanted to be was a housewife… this lady does that for a living! Design the house, paint the house, make stuff to put in the house, cook scrumptious things and make adorable clothes for the people that live in the house, and do it all on camera looking impeccable for millions of home-viewers to watch. Totally attainable.
So in case you’re keeping score… Life-determining event number one: Thanks to my mother, magazines & the magic of television, I want Martha’s Stewart’s job.
Life-determining thing number two: I saw my first Katharine Hepburn movie and decided, I want to do it all while being Katharine Hepburn. More specifically… Susan Vance (her character in Bringing Up Baby). Totally realistic goal.
Oh, come on… you know you want to be her too! That self-confidence, that way she speaks her mind, that fashion sense, that assurance that she can get anything she wants, if only she plays her cards right. I love it all! Plus, she’s clumsy, scattered, has a terrier and is *in love* with her straight man! I’m already all of those things too…
So, I suppose I am somewhere in the middle of achieving my own little dream, and while I don’t know exactly where I’ll end up yet, I do know I’ll get there in impeccable style using some serious Home Ec. skills! Follow the journey if you like…
…The End…
