… to bring something to a housewarming party
& preferably that something is alcohol.
Our very 1st Thanksgiving after getting married Husband and I hosted family and friends at our house for the very first time. In fact, we’ve made it a point not to have an empty house for too long since then! On that day, one of our most thoughtful friends brought a bottle of Beaujolais. He told us that it was a wine of celebration and the perfect way to kick off the entertaining in our home! Ever since then, it has been my go-to gift for any house-warming event–to some it may just be a bottle of wine but to me it is a *beautiful* sentiment and always brings good luck!

I was putting together a little thank you gift this morning and thought it may be a good idea to share my finds. A couple of weeks ago we spent the weekend in Atlanta with Husband’s Grammy. She is the epitome of Southern lady, and we had a wonderful time spending time and shopping with her. (She has great taste!) So I wrote her a thank you note and packaged it with one of these cute little house-boxed candles that smells lovely to send down as a little thank you.
If your mother raised you right, or if she didn’t and you’re trying desperately to make up for it, there is one thing that must be at the top of your ToDo list this week: Send out those thank you notes! If you completed them over the weekend, congratulations! If not, shame on you! Sitting here reading blog instead of getting things done. Lucky for you, I have a little inspiration to help you get back on track.
A Thank You note from Grace Kelly to Greta Garbo… even Hollywood royalty (prior to becoming real-life royalty) mind their P’s & Q’s!
Katharine Hepburn‘s simple red-lettered stationery was accented by a quick, and sometimes jittery, Hepburn’s pen.
The personal stationery of a few other people you may know…

According to Emily Post:
“Writing paper for a man should always be strictly conservative.”
Unless, of course, you’re Hugh Hefner…

{I especially love the typography layout on Tennessee William‘s stationery.}
I really loved this black & white stationery and, while reading a little Emily Post, I found out that it is actually the appropriate practice of those in mourning to send out any notes on black-edged stationery. I especially love the cards with the 1st lady’s signature in the upper right hand corner for personal notes to be included. Gorgeous, no?
“The letter we all love to receive is one that carries so much of the writer’s personality that she seems to be sitting beside us, looking at us directly and talking as she really would, could she have come on a magic carpet, instead of sending her proxy in ink-made characters on mere paper.”

…one of the most important tasks during the holiday season is to remember your friends! This is easily done with a personally written note inside a beautiful holiday card–forget those long, typed generic-form Christmas letters. The only one interested in how many teeth little Buddy lost this year is you (and maybe your mother). Boxed cards from Target will do, but a true Southern Belle knows buying cards from a favorite artist or stationer is the preferred method. While you’re at it, be sure to pick up some personalized stationery to send out those thank you notes at the end of the year! I was going to make our cards this year (also an acceptable method) but things have just gotten so busy that I’ve been looking at these *lovely* cards created by Anna Bond of Rifle Paper Co. She’s one of my very favorite illustrators, and I think it’s really important when choosing things like stationery, things that will go out into the world and give people a little feel for who you are, to choose an illustrator or designer that you love.
Incidentally, I may have to get some terrier cards for our thank you notes… I’m sure people would much rather get an illustrated Dexter Gordon at the top of their note than an illustrated me! Aren’t they cute?
